An illness begins long before we recognise it as such.
Its cause can always be found in our past.
Why are we ill,
depressed,
or suffering from eating disorders or behavioural problems ?
When we catch a cold or have a fever, it is a sign that our body needs a break, that it needs our attention. The best solution is to give ourselves that break to stop and look at what is currently happening in our lives, why we want to withdraw, what stress we can no longer bear.
As parents, we need to ask ourselves what is weighing on our children, whether a conflict at home or at school is overwhelming them.
If, at that moment, we identify the stress that is weakening our immune system and set out to find a solution, we will recover quickly.
But if we prefer to take a pill and suppress the signal, the symptom that our body is sending us, we may certainly be able to continue functioning, but this does not mean we are cured. Zinc ointments, cortisone, antipyretics and neuroleptics suppress the symptoms, but do not cure the condition and instead weaken our immune system.
Even though we live in modern societies, our bodies react according to biological responses that date back to the dawn of humanity. Like all mammals, human beings are equipped with survival programmes that enable them to flee from adversaries, provide for their basic needs and protect their children. When we find ourselves in a situation where we are faced with fear, where our basic needs and well-being are threatened, or where we are worried about the lives of our children, these programmes are activated and our nervous system goes into alarm mode, enabling us to take the necessary action to escape from the situation. If the stress persists, the body will soon send us a new signal and illness will slowly take hold in the depths of our body, which will begin to malfunction. Atypical dermatitis turns into asthma, diarrhoea into gallstones, headaches into depression. This is how the ground is prepared for deep-seated, chronic, autoimmune and degenerative diseases and mental disorders.
In treatment, we seek out the trigger, the cause, the origin of the imbalance, in order to retrace the journey and enable the path to healing.
